When you choose the name for something, people always ask, “Why did you pick that name?” or “what is the story behind it?”
Let me take you back to earlier this year when I felt strongly God was telling me He was about to do something new in our ministry. As I listened, I discerned Him leading me to Psalm 46:5:
“God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day”.
The author was originally speaking to those from a Jewish background, sharing with them about the blessing which would come through the great city of Zion. For me, these words were not just spoken thousands of years ago, but are as meaningful today as they were then. This verse serves as a reminder for today’s generation of women and girls to stand strong in their faith, knowing with confidence that if they do, God is faithful and will not allow us to fall.
With this in mind, God made it clear in my mind that we wanted our name to reflect what He meant us to us and what we were to Him. All the names I could think of, either did not quite fit who we believed God was calling us to become, or the name was already taken – I did not panic, though, because I was trusting God for our lightbulb moment.
Lizzie Hackney’s Lightbulb Moment
For those who do not know, the EDGE team consisted of three of us: Lizzie (our Breathe Co-ordinator), Ellie (our B-Loved Co-ordinator) and myself (CEO). As a team, we agreed to go away and brainstorm ideas for a suitable name and present our ideas at a later date. Lizzie messaged me and asked, “What do you think about about ‘Adore’ or ‘Adored’?”
Truthfully, I was initially unsure; however, the more I said it, and the more I wrote it down and studied it, the more I knew ‘Adore’ was the perfect choice!
Key Verse
Funnily enough, as soon as we agreed on the new name as a team, my lightbulb moment came when He cemented the verse that was key to everything we do.
This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. (John 15:12)
The reason we are here is because God first loved us. There is no way we can deny the truth when someone agreed to die on the Cross for you, and for me, so that we could live a life of freedom – how can anyone deny God’s love?
The name all made sense to us when we started thinking about how much God cares about us as His children. He does not just like us, but He simply adores us.
Lindsey explained the meaning of Adore perfectly in her own words,:
“When I hear the word Adore I think of loving, respecting and aspiring to be like someone who feels the same way about you, and both parties would do anything for one another that is beneficial and not hurtful to the other person – that’s Jesus, family and friends.”
I could not explain it better myself. At Adore, our prayer for girls and women is that they would firstly know they are loved and respected by God. Secondly, we equally long to see girls and women come to love and respect Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. God sent His Son to die on the Cross – that is the extent to which God adores us. Therefore, He would do absolutely anything for us.
The question I have for you is:
Would you be willing to do absolutely anything for your Father in Heaven?
